Below please find some random instances of exposition of life in the cyber physical computing lab. Enjoy the mini-tour!

EnviroSuite

(Left) Indoor pre-deployment testing of EnviroSuite! This permanently powered testbed is the next stage of evaluation after simulation and before the code is ready to leave the lab for the real world. Lots of bugs meet their demise on this table!

GeoPhone

(Right) Field deployment of GeoPhone in Trelease Woods, a few miles away from the UIUC campus. Dozens of motes are deployed to form a distributed microphone that detects and records forest sounds. In this case, it stores bird vocalizations for a study to understand bird social and mating behavior.

(Bottom) Quiz: The first person to correctly identify the GPS locations of all 20 motes in the figure below gets a free iPod nano!

Smart Attire

(Left) You have to sign a release form to wear the jacket in figure. It will track your location, record your sound, and identify your activities. The information will be uploaded wirelessly to a base station for archiving. (Warning: Not a good anniversary present.)

(Right) Tracking with Smart Attire on UVa campus.

“Hot” Sensing

Have you heard of HotNets and HotOS? Well, sensing can be so hot, some experiments do need sun-screen!

Fire can spread through acres of vegetation in literally less than 5 minutes. This picture is taken a few minutes into the burn of what used to be a lush prairie during a fire monitoring experiment. At that rate it will only be minutes more before these flames reach the forest in the background. Real-time response is needed to detect and react to land fire.

Remark: No grad students were hurt in this experiment… (but please don’t try this at home).
